Genetic Pathology

Molecular Genetic Pathology (MGP) is a subspecialty of Pathology and Medical Genetics in which molecular biology and molecular genetics concepts, theory, and technologies are used to diagnose disease, evaluate prognosis, control infections and care, and assess risk for genetic disorders. MGP is a medical genetics and pathology subspecialty in which the concepts, theory, and technology of molecular biology and molecular genetics are used to render or validate clinical diagnosis of mendelian genetic disorders, developmental disorders, infectious diseases, and malignancies, as well as to determine the natural history of such disorders, and to provide primary care physicians with knowledge to help them provide the best possible care to people with these conditions. The basic technologies of rapid genetic analysis, which are fundamental to molecular biology, were established a little more than two decades ago, and their use in clinical diagnosis has increased dramatically in the last decade. The leaders of the ABMG and ABP boards decided to establish joint certification in this field due to the rapid growth of applications and opportunities for new approaches to molecular diagnosis. The needs of a wide range of patient groups are met by genetic diagnostic laboratories, which depend on feedback from staff to ensure the development of correct, reliable data and the clinical interpretation of results in the sense of the clinical issue that prompted the test request. The medical genomics training programme prepares genetic pathologists to practise as laboratory medical genomics specialists while also ensuring that they retain their clinical skills by active participation in the life-long task of continuing professional growth. The genetic pathologist's education is often designed to prepare him or her to contribute effectively to translational research and development, undergraduate and post-graduate teaching, and other related professional activities.
